Vlog 22: Sleeping aboard Orion: A cozy night in microgravity

In this vlog, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen explains how the Artemis II crew will sleep aboard Orion. The cabin is arranged for all crewmembers to sleep at once in sleeping bags tethered to handrails, like hammocks in microgravity.  (Credits: Canadian Space Agency, NASA, Fulwell 73 UK Limited)

Transcript

We'll all string a sleeping bag up. More like you would string up a hammock.

Let's chat a little bit about managing microgravity. So, you see a few things here. These are handrails that we can use to stabilize ourselves as we float around. They're just positioned around the vehicle. Anywhere that they are tethered off, we can also use those to tether our sleeping bags, for example.

We're all going to sleep at the same time – and so we'll configure the cabin for crew sleep.

We'll all string a sleeping bag up, more like you would string up a hammock.

We'll just make it work: a couple people where these seats are; someone up a little bit higher in this space.

Christina has called dibs – she wants to sleep up here with her feet in the docking tunnel. So in this perspective, she’ll sort of be, like, hanging out of here like a bat.

But in microgravity, it'll be a comfy and cozy place to sleep.
