Vlog 20: Eating in space during the Artemis II lunar mission
In this vlog, CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen explains how he and the other Artemis II crewmembers will manage meals during their nearly 10-day trip around the Moon, covering pre-prepared foods, rehydration, warming options, and careful handling of packaging and waste in microgravity to keep the spacecraft clean. A lot of the foods we picked, we actually don’t mind eating them room temperature.
So really, this living space is everything. And right now, let’s think of it as our kitchen, where the four of us will gather to share meals when we’re on our nine-day trip around the Moon.
And when you eat food in space, it’s all pre-prepared: you rehydrate it, or you just open it up ready to eat.
So over next here to the commander’s seat is our potable water dispenser. So inside here is how we’ll set up our device that we go to portion out water to fill up water bags for us to drink, but also to rehydrate the food that we’ll be eating.
We can warm the food in the food warmer. Looks like a little briefcase, really, and you put your food in there and it just warms it up. Takes probably about an hour. It’s not like a microwave or anything. It’s just warm inside the suitcase.
The foods that we picked as our desired foods, we tried them without warming them up to save ourselves time. And there’s just not a lot of space availability in that food warmer. So a lot of the foods we picked, we actually don’t mind eating them room temperature.
You end up with a lot of packaging. So that’s one of the things you have to manage. We do have Velcro around the vehicle already. But everything that you use and want to set down, you’ve got to find a piece of Velcro to stick it to. And one of those things is the food packages. And so, they all have Velcro on it. As you’re waiting for them to rehydrate, you have to Velcro them somewhere before you consume them.
