Vlog 4: A mission for the Hansen family

2023-12-07 - Despite two high demanding careers and crazy agendas, Catherine and Jeremy Hansen found ways to take on the Artemis II adventure with their three teenagers as a strong family unit. Jeremy: Since I've been assigned to this mission, I've just been really proud of their response to the demands on our family, supporting one another, bringing high energy to keep up with this hectic pace.

Bill Nelson: Your Mission Specialist, Jeremy Hansen! (applause)

Jeremy: I am pretty lucky in this job that I have the support of this family. 

We're like every family. We have our challenges, but we support each other. And in those challenges we lean into it; we work through them together. When we need help, we ask for it.

Catherine: The kids have really embraced this opportunity as a family opportunity and a family adventure. And I think that the challenge will be tuning out a lot of some of the external noise and chaos that tends to be very distracting in the world we live in.

So we will make that our family's mission.

Devon: I get the question a lot. Like, do you want to follow in your dad's footsteps? Beyond just his job, which I think is what a lot of people look up to him for, I look up to my dad more for who he is as a person. Like, I really appreciate the patience he has, not just with me and our family.

And his confidence in his ability to just take things as they are and just get things done. And that's more what I want to look up to, what I want to have in my life. And I think it's important that when people look up to other people, they should see who that person is, not just what role they fill.

Jeremy: That’s nice.

Katelyn: I would definitely trust you to go and do this, like, 100% and give it your all, because this is what you've been working towards. 

And there's like, no doubt in my mind that this mission means as much to you as it means to all the Canadians out there and all the people in the world following this mission.

Jeremy: Any other behind-the-scenes things you want to share?

Ashley: I was just going to say that he naps a lot, but… (laughter)

(scratch sound) 

Interviewer: Do you have a secret talent?

Jeremy: I do. My secret talent or my superpower is sleeping; you can ask my wife. (scratch sound)

Jeremy: So just something that is important for me to share to the family while they're sitting here is since I've been assigned to this mission, I've just been really proud of their response to the demands on our family. 

Them rising to the challenge, supporting one another, bringing high energy to keep up with this hectic pace. 

And also how all of you have reaffirmed for me that this is bigger than just four people going on a journey. You see the importance of all of us investing our energy to invest in humanity's future. 

You all reflecting that back to me has been super helpful and supportive. So thank you.
