Spacewalks: No walk in the park!

Learn what it takes to perform a spacewalk, how spacesuits protect astronauts, and the challenges of working in space. This video features Canadian astronauts across multiple missions. (Credits: Canadian Space Agency, NASA)

A spacewalk, or extravehicular activity (EVA),

David Saint-Jacques (2019)

is one of the most complex operations astronauts can perform.

Dave Williams (2007)

Done to install or repair equipment, spacewalks last between 5 and 7 hours

Chris Hadfield (2001)

Steve MacLean (2006)

and are supported by a multidisciplinary team on the ground.

To protect them while they orbit Earth every 90 minutes at about 8 km/s (28,000 km/h),

astronauts wear a spacesuit that acts like a personal spacecraft.

The spacesuit:

• Takes 4.5 hours to put on
• Has up to 16 protective layers
• Weighs 145 kg (on Earth)

Equipped with:

• Oxygen
• Lights
• Cameras
• Drink bags

Protects against:

• radiation
• micrometeoroids
• extreme temperature variations

Spacewalks are not exactly a walk in the park,

but they certainly provide the best office view in the universe!
