Artemis II daily logbook 7–8: A call with the Prime Minister of Canada

On April 7, the Artemis II crew mostly had a rest day ahead of their journey home. The crew spoke with science officers about their lunar flyby and received a call from their astronaut colleagues abord the International Space Station.

The next day, they spoke with Mark Carney, Canada's Prime Minister; Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions; as well as Air Cadets and students.  (Credits: Canadian Space Agency, NASA)

Following a successful lunar flyby on flight day 6, the agenda was a bit lighter the next day for the Artemis II crew.

After a discussion with the science team about their observations of the surface, they had the unique opportunity to connect with the American and European crewmembers on the International Space Station.

Another important call also took place the next day amidst a very packed timeline aboard Orion.

Elder Bryan Akwirente Deer of the Bear Clan of the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawake first gave a traditional blessing.

Astronaut Jenni Gibbons, from Mission Control, and astronaut Joshua Kutryk, from Canadian Space Agency headquarters, then connected with Jeremy.

Jeremy and his crewmates spoke with the Prime Minister of Canada, special guests and youth assembled at the Canadian Space Agency in a lovely exchange with some lighthearted and funny moments balanced with more profound reflections.

Mark Carney:

“You’re setting a platform for the world to go even farther. Canadians are so proud of what you’re doing and the collaboration.

This is such a unique example for the world. I heard at one point, I think it was Pilot Glover, he was looking back at what he called spaceship Earth and, you know, what lessons we can take here on how to work together better.”

In true spirit of collaboration, Jeremy passed the microphone to each of his crewmates to share their perspective.

And Commander Reid took the opportunity to talk about friendship.

Reid Wiseman:

“I’ll just add that I flew to the International Space Station in 2014 and before we go up there, we have to go to Montreal to the Canadian Space Agency and do training up there. It was amazing, in just one week of my robotics training up there, I have lifelong friends from Canada, and I am honoured to serve alongside Jeremy, Josh and Jenni, truly the finest astronauts I have ever met.”

These four astronauts have a bond that will last a lifetime!
