Artemis II daily logbook 2: Jeremy Hansen heads to the Moon!

After completing the main checkout procedures and ensuring that the critical systems were in order, CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen and his Artemis II crewmates were given the go to proceed with the translunar injection engine burn that sets their spacecraft's course to the Moon. We all wanted to give a shout-out to our families first.

We just wanted to communicate to everyone around the planet who’s worked to make Artemis possible that we firmly felt the power of your perseverance during every second of that burn.

Humanity has once again shown what we are capable of, and it’s your hopes for the future that carry us now on this journey around the Moon.

It’s with these words that Jeremy reacted to the successful translunar injection (TLI). 

The engine burn sent him on his journey to become the first Canadian around the Moon, fulfilling his childhood dream and that of thousands of Canadians.

Fellow CSA astronaut Jenni Gibbons was sitting next to the capcom during TLI, a role that she will take on several times during the mission, including during the lunar flyby.  

Great to have a chance just to say thanks to my family and missing them and for the support of Canadians back home. I really appreciate the opportunity to be here and do this.

We just feel like we’re lifted up by the team that supports us.

The fact that we launched, it was just a moment of disbelief. It just totally takes you by surprise even though you’re expecting it, at least for me anyway. And I just had a huge smile across my face.

I really like it up here! (laughter) I wish I could have gotten here sooner!

It’s just such a tremendous place to be. The views are extraordinary, it’s really fun to be floating around, and it just makes me feel like a little kid!
