Are there any technologies that help astronauts stay connected?

2022-10-25 – European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti shares a few key technologies available on the International Space Station that help astronauts stay connected with family and friends on Earth.

On the Space Station, we are very spoiled by a number of opportunities supported by technology that allow us to be in touch with our family and friends.

We have a voiceover IP phone system, so we can dial any phone number on the surface of the planet and talk to anyone, as long as they pick up the phone.

They cannot call us back which, you know, can be good or bad, depending on the situation, but we can call anyone.

And once a week, we also have an opportunity for a videoconference with our loved ones.

So that’s a two-way video so they can see us and we can see them, and that’s really neat because we really get to experience some family time.

For the ownership and usage of the videos, please see the Terms section.
