As humanity moves toward establishing a sustained presence on the Moon, securing reliable resources is essential. Water plays a vital role, not only for supporting life, but also as a key asset for exploration. To enable the production of food, oxygen, and rocket fuel, it is crucial to develop methods of removing potential contaminants from lunar water sources.

The Aqualunar Challenge, led by the Canadian Space Agency in partnership with the Privy Council Office's Impact Canada Initiative, called on Canadian innovators to develop solutions for purifying water on the Moon.

Following three stages of the Challenge, a jury of experts selected Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC) as the grand prize winner. The company will receive $400,000 to continue development of LunaPure. LunaPure is designed to provide a self-contained, low-maintenance, sustainable system that purifies water on the Moon.
