Biography
Maria is a grade 7 & 8 Science teacher who lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba and teaches in a small farming community in rural Stonewall, Manitoba. She has taught for the past 20 years STEM, Phys. Ed and Art for K - 8. Maria is director of the Student Spaceflight Experiment program for Interlake which has to date engaged over 1500 students and 21 teachers across her school division. She sent up 2 experiments to the International Space Station. The program garnered attention from local, Provincial and National media, and became a Global National feature story and a CBC National "Only in Canada" feature story. She is currently working as a mentor with 6 space club students as part of the Manitoba Cube Satellite -1 Engineering team designing an instrument for the Cube Satellite in collaboration with the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg and York University. She ran a space club focusing on STEM for middle years students for the past 10 years. Maria is a winner of the Prime Minister’s Excellence in Teaching Award, Manitoba Teacher of the Year Group Collaboration . She is a Space Exploration Educator Crew member at Space Center Houston , Let’s Talk Science teacher leader, Honeywell Educators Space Academy International Ambassador and has been Keynote addresses at various conferences locally, nationally and internationally.
