First light for UVIT!

2015-11-30 - This cluster of stars is known to astronomers by the unpoetic name “NGC 188,” (its catalogue number), located in the constellation of Cepheus, not too far from the North Star in the night sky. This is the first image beamed back from the UVIT telescope aboard the Indian Space Research Organization’s ASTROSAT space observatory, launched in September. Canada contributed three detectors for UVIT. This image – the telescope’s “first light”—proves that UVIT survived the forces of launch, is performing really well and is now ready for science!
