Vlog 16: Sharing responsibilities on Artemis II

It will be busy aboard Orion during the Artemis II mission. During this first crewed test flight of the Artemis campaign, the crew will be working hard during the nearly 10 days of the mission. But what will be the role of CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen? He explains in this vlog. (Credits: Canadian Space Agency, NASA, Fulwell 73 UK Limited)

We’ll all get to fly the vehicle. We’ll all get to control the vehicle. We’ll all take photos, and we’ll just share the duties throughout the rest of the mission.

I often get asked the question, what is my role in the Artemis II mission? And it’s been a little bit difficult to answer because we haven’t fully defined what each of us will do. For a launch and landing where we’re all strapped into our seats, Reid the commander and Victor the pilot will be in the seats that have the controls, and they will manage those phases of flight.

Christina and I as mission specialists 1 and 2 will be in the seats below them. And then once we get to spacewe actually deconstruct the seats to get them out of the way, to have more room.

We all train, and cross train, for all of the duties and roles, even flying the vehicle on launch and entry, so that we have perspectives on that training. We can help improve that training, but also as a backup in case we ended up in some unforeseen circumstance.

Very unlikely. But of course, it’s space travel. So, we, we take every precaution and we all train for every aspect.

We’ll all get to fly the vehicle. We’ll all get to control the vehicle. We’ll all take photos, and we’ll just share the duties throughout the rest of the mission.

And then when it’s time to return to Earth, we’ll put the seats back together, and Reid and Victor will get in the commander and pilot seats and come on home.
