The five senses in space: touch

2013-05-10 - The fifth and final instalment of our 'Senses in Space' series. CSA astronaut Chris Hadfield describes how feet adapt to the near-weightless environment of the International Space Station. (Credits: Canadian Space Agency, NASA)

Transcript

Chris Hadfield : Well, our sense of touch isn't really affected in orbit. After about two months up the bottoms of our feet start to get really soft. But the tops of our feet start to get raw, and super sensitive. Why? It's because we don't walk on the souls of our feet. And instead, the tops of our feet are used to hook around doorways and handrails, and hold me up right now to keep me from bumping into things.
