2016-07-15 – The Public Service Commission of Canada and the Canadian Space Agency have published statistics on how many applications were opened between June 17 and July 6, 2016, for the astronaut recruitment campaign. The infographic features a map of Canada with statistics on applications opened between June 17 and July 6, 2016, for Canada's astronaut recruitment campaign.

There is circled information on each province and territory:

  1. the number of people who opened an application there, and
  2. the percentage of the total number of opened applications.

Here are the statistics in detail.

  • Yukon: 6 people; 0.2%
  • Northwest Territories: 7 people; 0.2%
  • Nunavut: 5 people; 0.1%
  • British Columbia: 376 people; 11.2%
  • Alberta: 396 people; 11.7%
  • Saskatchewan: 67 people; 2.0%
  • Manitoba: 67 people; 2.0%
  • Ontario: 1,189 people; 35.3%
  • Quebec: 740 people; 21.9%
  • New Brunswick: 48 people; 1.4%
  • Nova Scotia: 85 people; 2.5%
  • Prince Edward Island: 13 people; 0.4%
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: 46 people; 1.4%

327 people outside Canada opened an application, which is 10% of the total number of 3,372.

69% of the applications were opened by men and 23% by women. The other 9% did not declare their sex, which is subject to voluntary disclosure.

Lastly, the five Canadian cities (census metropolitan areas) with the largest numbers of aspiring astronauts are Toronto (417 people), Montreal (377 people), Ottawa-Gatineau (256 people), Calgary (243 people) and Vancouver (241 people).
