Oil Spill near the Galapagos Islands

On January 16, 2001, a major oil spill occurred off the coast of Ecuador, near the Galapagos Islands when a tanker carrying diesel fuel ran aground. This wide beam image was acquired on January 30, 2001, and shows the spill moving north, away from the islands made famous by biologist Charles Darwin. (Credit: Canadian Space Agency)
