Astrobiology Working Group

History

The Astrobiology Working Group (AWG) was formed at the first Canadian Astrobiology Workshop held in Montréal, June 15 to 16, 2004. This CSA-sponsored workshop brought together Canadian scientists from a broad range of disciplines, but with a shared interest in astrobiology. Participants explored the strengths in the Canadian scientific community and began to address several issues pertaining to astrobiology, Canadian space exploration and future exploration missions to Mars and elsewhere.

Mandate

1. Make recommendations to CSA's space exploration advisory committee on programmatic aspects (e.g., scientific priorities, missions, international collaborations) related to astrobiology and encourage communication between CSA, the scientific community and industrial partners.
2. Foster interdisciplinary scientific collaborations amongst Canadian researchers and with international colleagues.
3. Highlight Canadian scientific expertise and research results in astrobiology and related fields.
4. Encourage broader participation of the scientific community in CSA and related activities (e.g., Canadian Space Exploration Workshops).
5. Encourage participation of a younger generation of scientists in astrobiology and related sciences, and in CSA-related activities by engaging in outreach and educational activities.
