Flooding in Queensland, Australia

Location
Description

Situation report

In January, 2011, Australia's northeastern state of Queensland was subjected to historic flooding along many coastal rivers. This was a result of a wet spring followed by extreme rain events over Christmas and in early January. September to November was the wettest spring since records began 111 years ago, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Climate Data Center. The floods have affected over 200,000 people and an area roughly the size of France and Germany, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
