At the bottom of this image of Pinchinada province in Ecuador is Quito the capital, founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city 2,850 m above sea level. Despite an earthquake in 1917, the historic centre of the city is the best-preserved in Latin America. Not far from the city is the volcano La Pichincha, a Unesco World Heritage site since 1978.
