Mekong River (MRC)

On August 15 2008, The International Charter "Space and Major Disasters" was activated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on behalf of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) following recent heavy rains over this area. This map illustrates flood water areas (depicted in red) detected by RADARSAT-1 satellite along the affected region of the Mekong River surrounding the city of Phnom Penh. Flood water detection was made by comparing the RADARSAT-1 data recorded on August 24 August 2008 and May 14 2000. For more details, visit www.disasterscharter.org/disasters/CALLID_216_e.html

RADARSAT-1 images of the October 8, 2005 earthquake in Kashmir. This image of the Muzaffarabad area is a composite of two of the those supplied to the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters, one acquired on June 20, 2005 and one on October 18, 2005.

Two highlighted areas show in detail some of the changes detected through the layering of the two images. The yellow-green (left)  inset shows the higher lake level (dark blue) after the significant rain of the last few weeks. The turquoise (right) inset shows one of many landslides that occurred after the earthquake, highlighted in yellow.
