Slated for launch in 2014, JWST will probe the Universe to learn more about the first luminous glows after the Big Bang, the formation of solar systems, and the evolution of our own solar system.
This crest symbolizes Canada’s contribution to JWST,which will guarantee telescope time for our researchers. The target represents the Canadian cameras (Fine Guidance Sensor, or FGS) that will guide the telescope very precisely. The powerful tunable filter imager (TFI) will help JWST peer through dusty clouds to see stars forming and planetary systems, represented by the swirl. The small circles represent exoplanets—new worlds that these solar systems might hold.
JWST is a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency. The Canadian contribution is built by COM DEV, with a science team led by the National Research Council and the Université de Montréal.
