Five NASA astronauts and Steve MacLean of the Canadian Space Agency were chosen for Mission STS-115. The objective of this 11- or 12-day mission is to continue the construction of the International Space Station by installing truss segments to elongate its structure and solar panels to increase its electrical power.

With this mission, Canadian astronaut MacLean will become the first Canadian astronaut to operate Canadarm2 in space and the second to perform a spacewalk.

Steve MacLean's role

  • Inspection of the Space Shuttle using Canadian technologies
  • A seven-hour spacewalk to install components such as the solar panel motor
  • Space Station assembly activities using the two Canadian robotic arms
  • Supervision of spacewalks by two American astronauts
  • Photograph geological characteristics of the Canadian landscape to evaluate the environmental impact of deforestation and atmospheric change
