ISS Commander: Yuri Ivanovich Onufrienko

Colonel, test cosmonaut
Resides in Star City
Born February 6, 1961 in Ryasnoe, Zolochev district, Kharkov region, Ukraine.

Education: Graduated from the V.M. Komarov Eisk Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1982 with a pilot-engineer’s diploma. Graduated from Moscow State University in 1994 with a degree in cartography.

Cosmonaut experience: In 1989, he was appointed to the position of cosmonaut candidate at the Cosmonaut Training Center.

From February 21 to September 2, 1996, he served as Commander on Mir-21. One month later he and Yuri Usachev were joined by NASA’s Shannon Lucid. During Mir-21 he performed numerous research experiments, an participated in six EVAs. He and Yuri Usachev were joined by French cosmonaut Claudie André-Deshays after the departure of Shannon Lucid. Altogether, he has logged 193 days in space. Since December 7, 2001 Onufrienko has been living and working aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Flight Engineer: Carl E. Walz

NASA Astronaut. Born September 6, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Education: Graduated from Charles F. Brush High School, Lyndhurst, Ohio, in 1973; received a bachelor of science degree in physics from Kent State University, Ohio, in 1977, and a master of science in solid state physics from John Carroll University, Ohio, in 1979.

NASA experience: Selected by NASA in January 1990, Walz is a veteran of three spaceflights, and has logged over 833 hours (34.5 days) in space. He served as a mission specialist on STS-51 in 1993, was the Orbiter flight engineer (MS-2) on STS-65 in 1994, and was a mission specialist on STS-79 in 1996. Since December 7, 2001 Walz has been living and working aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Flight Engineer: Daniel W. Bursch

(Captain, USN)
NASA Astronaut. Born July 25, 1957, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, but considers Vestal, New York, to be his hometown.

Education: Graduated from Vestal Senior High School, Vestal, New York, in 1975; received a bachelor of science degree in physics from the United States Naval Academy in 1979, and a master of science degree in engineering science from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1991.

NASA experience: Selected by NASA in January 1990, Bursch became an astronaut in July 1991. His technical assignments to date include: Astronaut Office Operations Development Branch, working on controls and displays for the Space Shuttle and Space Station; Chief of Astronaut Appearances; spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM) in mission control. A veteran of three space flights, Bursch has logged over 746 hours in space. He served as a mission specialist on STS-51 in 1993, STS-68 in 1994 and STS-77 in 1996.

Since December 7, 2001 Bursch has been living and working aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
