When the Space Shuttle Columbia lifts off in the fall of 1992 for mission STS-52, included among the equipment and effects on board will be a Scouts Canada patch and neckerchief Canadian astronaut Dr. Steve MacLean, a former Scout, respects the goals and traditions of scouting. These items will form part of the Canadian government's officialflight kit.
Room has been allotted on the shuttle to take official memorabilia into space during the mission. Other items of the flight kit include: Canadian Space Agency coats-of-arms; Canadian Astronaut Program patches and pins; MacLean Mission Insignia patches; as well as Canadian flags.
12 Provincial and Territorial flags will be flown and, upon the shuttle's return, will be used to create official montages for distribution across the country. Dr. MacLean's hometown, the city of Ottawa, will be represented as well. The city of Saint-Hubert, home of the Canadian Space Agency, will have flags on board the shuttle.
Flags, stickers or patches representing the various research institutions of the Canadian Principal Investigators (scientists behind the experiments) as well as from other academic, research, professional and support institutions involved in the mission will also be on board for official presentations after the flight.
Dr. MacLean is a hockey and baseball fan and included in the official flight kit will be crests of the Ottawa Senators, the Montréal Expos, and the Toronto Blue Jays.
The presentations will be made to each of the contributors to the flight kit by Dr. MacLean and his back up, Bjarni Tryggvason, during their post-flight visits of selected Canadian cities and organizations.
