Hello, I'm Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Bob Thirsk on board the International Space Station. By the time you see this video message, I'll be home on Earth, celebrating the 2010 Winter Olympics with you.

The Olympics takes place on a global stage where the world's best come to play. Olympic and Paralympic athletes compete to bring pride to their respective countries and further the quest for excellence that resides in the collective heart of humanity.

In 2010, Canada, and in particular, British Columbia-my native province-have the honor of igniting and hosting the Olympic spirit.

The Olympic Torch has lit a path of Northern Lights across our great Nation on the longest relay ever within the borders of a host country. While the torch may not physically reach the International Space Station, the ideals embodied by the Olympic flame certainly have: nations coming together in peaceful collaboration to push the limits of the possible.

Canada has a long history of seeking excellence between and beyond our borders. Our space technologies stand as a testament to this truth. That's why Dextre, our Canadian-made, robotic handyman on the International Space Station is giving our Olympians a symbolic salute.

To all my fellow Canadians, enjoy being part of one of the greatest ongoing events of human history. And to our athletes, you do us proud. Thank you and keep the Olympic spirit strong!

Let the Games begin!
