MD Robotics is a wholly owned subsidiary of MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) of Richmond, B.C. The company was formed in May 1999 following the acquisition of the robotics business from Spar Aerospace Limited.
MD Robotics has a heritage of over 30 years of achievements. Best known for the Canadarm, or Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator, MD Robotics developed and built the first Canadarm under contract to the National Research Council of Canada, Canada’s contribution to NASA’s space shuttle program. Subsequently, NASA ordered four additional units to augment its fleet.
Building on the heritage of Canadarm and our expertise in robotics, MD Robotics is the prime contractor to the Canadian Space Agency for the Mobile Servicing System, a sophisticated robotic system critical to the assembly, maintenance and servicing of the International Space Station.
The Mobile Servicing System is made up of three main elements:
Canadarm2, launched on April 19, 2001,
The Mobile Base System, launched on May 30, 2002,
The Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, a two-armed robot to be launched in 2004.
