Satellite Communications

Orbital Needs of Canadian Telecommunications

Grade Level and Curricular Connections

Telecommunications is not specifically identified in the Pan Canadian Protocol on Science, however the effect of science and technology on our daily lives is a major consideration under this protocol. North America is highly dependent on science and technology, especially in Telecommunications. To this end this activity can be used under the following sections of the protocol at:

Grade 7-9
Grade 10-12
  • STSE - 112, 113
  • Skills - 206
  • Attitudes - 428
  • Skills - 213, 215
  • Attitudes - 443

Goal of Activity

A major part of human existence is interaction with other humans, and a major portion of that interaction is communication. Different countries can have different socio-economic priorities and the means for distributing information about these priorities can be enhanced by satellite telecommunications. The ideal location for communication satellites is in a very narrow region of space known as geostationary orbit. Obtaining locations in this orbit requires well-informed, carefully considered communication through negotiation or in some cases, debates. This resource challenges students to take a national identity and to develop communications skills needed to win valuable recognition for their country's needs.
