Today’s Uses for Spacesuit Materials

The use of a spacesuit isn’t just limited to space. The whole suit or its parts and materials can be adapted to suit certain needs of people here on Earth.

A Chance to Play in the Sun

Some people are born with genetic disorders that make them allergic or very sensitive to sunlight. When kids grow up with these disorders, they can’t play outside during the daytime—otherwise, their skin may start to blister.

For these kids, the spacesuits can be very handy! The suit and the visor are built to block ultraviolet (UV) rays which means they can play in sunlight.

Multi-layered Pure Aluminum Foil

This "reflective technology" that is used on the gloves has been used on earth for a long time. Builders use it to insulate houses and water heaters. Some firefighters also use it in emergency fire shelters to keep heat out.

Cool Shades

The visor in the space helmet was designed for to protect the astronaut’s eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light. Today, that same technology is being used by everyday people.

People who work in medical labs use medical spectacles, while people who like to "hit the slopes" use that technology in their ski goggles. Some sunglasses are also constructed with the same technology to protect your eyes during those bright, sunny days!
