Making a Photovoltaic Cell

Making a Photovoltaic Cell

You will need:

  • Pennies
  • Aluminium foil
  • Paper towel
  • Scissors
  • 250 millilitres (ml) (1 cup) water with 10 teaspoons of salt added
  • Two pieces of insulated copper wire
  • Tape

  • Use a penny to draw circles on a sheet of aluminium foil and a piece of paper towel. Cut out all the circles and moisten the paper towel circles with salt water.
  • Pile up the circles in the following order: copper wire, paper towel, and aluminium foil. Each group of three circles constitutes a cell.
  • Strip down both ends of the pieces of wire. Tape one end of each wire to each end of a cell. Place the two free ends in contact, preferably in a dark room and watch the sparks fly.
