The overall objective of the Stepping Out learning resource is to develop students' abilities, knowledge and skills in space-related science subjects.
It is in line with the objectives indicated in the Common Framework of Science Learning Outcomes for grade 6.
Prerequisite knowledge
Fourth-grade-level knowledge of science and technology:
Physical universe: density, sound wave transmission, characteristics of movement, transportation technology, use of simple measurement instruments, terminology related to understanding of the physical universe.
Earth and space: The Sun, Earth, Moon system, Earth technologies, terminology and conventions.
Living universe: the interaction between human beings and their environment.
Strategies: address a problem, diagram or illustrate the problem, formulate questions and hypotheses, explore, anticipate, devise solutions.
Instructional approach
The activities of the Stepping Out learning resource are based on an instructional approach that positions the student as the pivotal agent of his or her learning environment.
The educator builds on the questions asked by students to initiate problem-solving scenarios. The educator is open to exploring his or her environment, is neither afraid to make mistakes nor is obliged to know or reveal solutions to the problem-solving scenarios. The educator stimulates students' scientific curiosity, makes sure they can tell the difference between science fact and science fiction, and provides research leads, documentation and resources. The educator develops a positive learning environment in which students are encouraged to ask questions and actively research answers.
