My Body in Space

There are many challenges that an astronaut must contend with when leaving the safety of one's spacecraft during a spacewalk. These issues are important considerations that help determine everything from an astronaut's training, and their tools to the actual procedure followed for each and every spacewalk.

The My Body in Space resource, designed to compliment Canadian Space Agency astronaut Dr. Dave Williams' record-setting spacewalks during STS-118 explore the topics of how visual cues (or a lack thereof) during a spacewalk effect the brain and neurovestibular system at the grade 5/6 level, the pre-breathe protocols that each astronaut must endure and their relation to the respiratory system at the grade 7/8 level and how an astronaut's fingernails, enclosed in a spacewalking glove is a prime breeding ground for bacteria at the grade 10/11 level.
